Claude Sonnet 5 Is Now Available

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5, the new flagship Sonnet model in AI Data Stream. Sonnet 4.6 stays available as the previous generation so you can compare.

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5 today. It is now the flagship Sonnet model in AI Data Stream and the best balance of speed and capability. Sonnet 4.6 remains available as the previous generation, so you can compare the two on your own analytics before switching.

Pricing

On the standard API we use, Sonnet 5 is priced at:

  • Input: $2 per million tokens
  • Output: $10 per million tokens

Update (12 August 2026): Sonnet 5 launched with a standard price of $3 / $15 per million tokens (the same as Sonnet 4.6) and introductory pricing of $2 / $10 through 31 August 2026. Anthropic has since made the introductory price permanent — the planned increase on 1 September 2026 will not happen. That makes Sonnet 5 a third cheaper than Sonnet 4.6, so moving to it is an even clearer upgrade.

What’s New

Anthropic reports gains across coding, agentic, and tool-use tasks, with stronger long-horizon reasoning than Sonnet 4.6. See Anthropic’s announcement for the full details.

Sonnet 5 also updates how it reasons: it uses adaptive thinking to decide on its own when to reason before answering, so there is nothing extra to configure.

Sonnet 4.6 Stays Available

Unlike some past updates, we have not retired the previous model. Sonnet 4.6 is still in the model picker, labelled as the previous generation, so you can run both side by side and pick the one that works best for your data. Sonnet 5 is the new default for new providers.

Effort Levels

In AI Data Stream, Sonnet 5 offers the low, medium, and high effort levels, the same as Sonnet 4.6. Higher effort trades speed for deeper reasoning — pick whichever suits the task. (The xhigh and max levels remain exclusive to Opus.)
